Blackjack is a war. It is you versus the casino, either live or online. To win the war you must have a battle plan that covers all aspects of the battle: card counting, basic strategy, money management. In the blackjack world, we call this a system. A shoe (optional). If your home blackjack game is going to use multiple decks, buy a shoe and deal from it instead of dealing buy hand. These can be found in any gaming supply store online. Dealing Blackjack At Home. Most card games that are played at home share a similar characteristic. The effective use of a sap or blackjack is a two edged sword. In its inherent effectiveness also lies the potential for injury beyond that desired including death. Achieving the desired effects while avoiding undesired results is a delicate balance.

A couple of weeks ago I played a little blackjack with Mark from the 360 Vegas podcast at The D in Downtown Vegas. We had a blast and I had my first winning blackjack session in far too long. My level of perfection with blackjack strategy is about 90%-95% accurate. It’s not perfect but good enough for me.

Mark used a blackjack strategy card as a reference every time he wasn’t sure what the right play was. I haven’t seen someone use a blackjack strategy card in a casino in a while and that’s silly. Blackjack strategy cards are legal to use at the table and cost less than $5 whether you buy in a casino or via amazon (links below).

$5 for blackjack strategy card is a small investment that you should recoup in your first session or two of blackjack, even if you’re playing at a $5 table. Over time you should learn the correct plays without having to use the card. This is a great item to keep on hand in Vegas if you’re unsure how to play blackjack perfectly or you’re drinking a few too many to think straight this comes in handy.

Over time it may not matter mathematically if you or others at the blackjack table play with perfect strategy but in the moment making the wrong play stinks when you lose. Making the wrong play also makes other players cranky.

Gambling should be fun. Don’t make people cranky.

Basic Blackjack Terms

As with every classic casino table game, there is a lot of lingo thrown about which might sound double Dutch to novice blackjack players. What on earth does it all mean?

Ultimately, you will become more familiar with all the blackjack lingo as you develop your game, whether that is in the brick and mortar casino or at an online casino.

Nonetheless, we have listed some handy basic blackjack terminology below:

  • Stand. The player stays with the cards they were dealt
  • Hit. The player is dealt another card, and they can be dealt more if they wish. If the total of the cards exceeds 21 at any point, the player is bust and loses the hand
  • Surrender. This is where the player gives up half his bet to forfeit the hand
  • Double down. The player doubles their original bet and is dealt one more card, and it can only be one
  • Split. If a player is dealt a pair (two 4s for example), or two ten-valued cards, such as a queen and a king, the player can split those cards into two different hands. The player is then dealt another card to each hand. The player must make a second bet of equal value to the first to use the split
  • Hard hand. A hand without an ace
  • Soft hand. A hand with an ace
